Whatever I find interesting

Meade LX90

LX 90 weight

The telescope assembly weighs approx 14.5 kg with no eyepieces etc. The tripod is approx 8kg. Wedge 4.5kg. The exact weight you have to lug around depends of course on what is attached….

LX 90 focussing

The LX90 focusser works by moving the mirror. Turning the focusser clockwise pulls the mirror further from the correcting plate and secondary. This lengthens the path of the light before it reaches the eyepiece, so it has the same effect as pulling the eyepiece away from the back of the scope.

Obviously, as a result, if you add something to the path like a diagonal, you need to turn the focusser anticlockwise to compensate for its presence. Add too much and there is no more anticlockwise play left and you are stuck.

If you focus closer than infinity, you need to turn the focuser clockwise to compensate ( numbers below go down)

Max clockwise to max anticlockwise = 88 turns.

  • Using 2″ Barrel and 1.25″ adapter. Figures are number of turns anti from max clockwise.
  • Camera prime focus = 50
  • Camera with eyepiece projection using 26 plossl = 47
  • MA25 = 45.25
  • MA12 = 45
  • MA4 = 45
  • 10mm delos = 44.5
  • WO40 = 44.5
  • Webcam 44
  • Put on erecting prism add 8.25 anticlockwise
  • Put on 3x barlow add 1.25 anticlockwise
  • Put on double holder add 8.25 anticlockwise

If you need 35 turns and you are on 40 you need fewer anti = more clockwise So if you need a larger number, you can instead not put the new piece in as far
